• A new round of official Kentucky Derby future wagering last weekend kept Barnes the favorite, but the San Vicente Stakes winner’s odds floated up to 8-1 from 6-1 four weeks earlier. Bob Baffert stablemate Citizen Bull moved up to second at 9-1 after his Robert B. Lewis Stakes win. Jumping into the top 10 among individual prospects for the May 3 Derby were Burnham Square (15-1) after his Holy Bull Stakes win in Florida; Sandman (16-1) after his slow-starting second in the Southwest Stakes in Arkansas; and John Hancock (21-1) after his Sam F. Davis Stakes win in Tampa. East Avenue (18-1) fell in bettors’ estimation after his fade to 10th in the Risen Star.
• Barnes, Baffert-trained Rodriguez (29-1 in future betting) and Michael McCarthy-trained Journalism (19-1) are expected for the San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita on March 1, the day of the Santa Anita Handicap.
• Baffert’s Madaket Road (Irad Ortiz Jr. riding) and McCarthy’s Bullard (Umberto Rispoli) are among 13 horses challenging favorite Sandman (Cristian Torres) in the Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park in Arkansas on Sunday, moved from Saturday because of weather.
• Saturday’s Wishing Well Stakes at Santa Anita attracted stakes winners Stay and Scam (Frankie Dettori) and Laulne (Flavien Prat). They’ll have to deal with the improving Queen Maxima (Juan Hernandez), coming off good wins at the optional claiming level. Six fillies and mares are entered.
• Dettori will leave Santa Anita and start riding in Florida on Feb. 28 before moving on to Kentucky and riding on the East Coast the rest of the year, agent Ron Anderson announced on X. In 2024, the global star stayed at Santa Anita through April, winning six races in a row there April 6.
• Los Alamitos’ Winter Series finals for quarter horses Saturday and Sunday produced a runaway winner and a close-as-can-be photo finish. In the Los Alamitos Winter Derby, Brown Coffeee (Jose Nicasio riding) led all the way to win by 1½ lengths over Train B Taka (Edwin Escobedo) and pay $4. In the next night’s Brad McKinzie Winter Championship, Unrelentless (Justine Klaiber) edged London Toby (Gabriel Lara) by 4/1,000ths of a second and paid $4.60. Each race was a Grade I at 400 yards.
• The $20 million Saudi Cup, the world’s richest race, will be run Saturday with a field of 13 led by Forever Young (Ryusei Sakai), third in last year’s Kentucky Derby and Breeders’ Cup Classic, and Romantic Warrior (James McDonald), the Hong Kong turf king. Long shots include Defunded (Antonio Fresu traveling from California), the two-time Grade I winner at Santa Anita for Baffert who now races in Saudi Arabia. On the undercard, the $2 million Riyadh Dirt Sprint is led by Straight No Chaser (John Velazquez), the Eclipse Award-winning sprinter based at Santa Anita.
• The Humboldt County Fair in Ferndale will apply for racing dates Aug. 16-Sept. 1, an executive told the Daily Racing Form’s Steve Andersen. If approved by the California Horse Racing Board, tiny but charming Ferndale is likely to be the only Northern California thoroughbred track open this year. The California Association of Racing Fairs decided not to seek dates for its four tracks, as did the operators of non-fair racing at Pleasanton.
