HORNETS HOSTING REGIONALS
The top ten ranked Emporia State men’s and women’s disc golf teams play host to the Mid-American Regional Championships presented by Dynamic Discs. A total of 34 men’s teams and six women’s teams representing 22 programs will compete on four championship courses in Emporia. Four teams are ranked in the top 50 nationally, including Emporia State, Kansas State and Oklahoma Christian who are all ranked top ten on the men’s side.
LAST ROUND
The Hornets D1 men competed the Midwest Collegiate Takeover in Morton, IL and took second place in the event. With the top two finish, the D1 men qualified for the national championships. The foursome of Justin Farrell, TJ Reel, Cade Kohlmeier and Micah Tatro shot 24 under through three rounds, finishing ten strokes behind first-place Cincinnati.
THE COACH
Eric McCabe is the first coach in the history of the Emporia State competitive disc golf team. An Emporia native and the 2010 PDGA World Champion, McCabe led the Hornet men to a national runner-up finish in their first year while the women placed 16th nationally.
From 2001-16 McCabe won 84 PDGA sanctioned events with 173 top three finishes. He has five top-25 finishes in PDGA World Championship competition, 13 top-25 finishes in other majors, and placed in the top-25 of 54 National Tour events during his career.
THE FORMAT
Early check-in will take place on Friday, November 8 and then round one will be a shotgun start on Saturday, November 9 with the women’s singles taking place at Peter Pan and the men’s singles happening at Jones West. Round two will approximately start at 1:00 p.m. with the women at Jones West and the men at Jones East. On Sunday, November 10, round three is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. with the team rounds. The women will play their round at Peter Pan with the men playing at Jones Gold.
ABOUT THE HORNETS
Both the men and women are ranked in the top ten nationally, with the women ranking second and the men ranking ninth. TJ Reel is ranked #15 in the nation, while Justin Farrell is right behind at #21. Micah Tatro and Cade Kohlmeier round out the gold team and are ranked #53 and #95 respectively. On the women’s side, partners Atlanta Kreuger and Madeline Joiner are ranked #5 and #6 respectively. The other pairing for the women is Maya Ringgold and Rebekah Thompson as they both also rank in the top 15 nationally.
