ABILENE – Abilene Christian women’s golf battled through heavy winds at the Abilene Country Club to take a 12-stroke lead through two rounds in the West Texas Classic on Monday. The Wildcats will take a 21-over 581 into the final round of their inaugural home tournament on Tuesday.
Tarleton State, Oral Roberts and South Dakota remain within striking distance of ACU at 600 strokes or less. The Wildcats came in first place at the conclusion of each round, recording a 12-over 292 following Round 1 and a 9-over 289 at the end of Round 2.
The nation’s 99th-ranked college golfer according to Clippd, junior Ryann Honea leads the way on the individual leaderboard at 2-under 138. She was the tournament’s only golfer to finish under par through two rounds after notching a 3-under 67 and a 1-over 71. Honea led the field with eight birdies and shot the least number of bogeys with four.
Honea has a five-stroke advantage over Tarleton’s Darianys Guzman in second place.
Manon Guille joined Honea as the only golfers in the field of 84 to score under par in the first round, firing a 1-under 69. Her 8-over 78 in the second round moved her into eighth place at 7-over 147. Guille carded seven birdies, the second-most of the day, and seven bogeys, the third-least.
Kate Pickrell is tied for fourth place at 5-over 145 after tying for the second round’s top score at even par as winds began to pick up.
Julia Vollmer, Marissa Loya and Jiyu Han are each locked in a tie for 11th place at 9-over 149. Loya and Han posted identical scores of 3-over 73 and 6-over 76 in the first and second rounds, respectively. Like Pickrell, Vollmer showed a five-stroke improvement from one round to the next, carding a 2-over 72 in Round 2.
Jasmine Do and Sydney Williams rounded out the Wildcats in ties for 24th and 27th place, respectively. Do is competing as an individual along with Guille and Han.
The third and final round of the West Texas Classic begins at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.
