SHELTON, CT (WFSB) – A large fire late Friday night has destroyed a historic building at the Highland Golf Club in Shelton, just months before it was set to celebrate its 125th anniversary.
Firefighters responded to the golf course, located at 261 Wooster Street, shortly before midnight after receiving reports of a large flame.
Upon arrival, crews found that the fire had spread to the roof, and it quickly engulfed the building.
No one was inside when the fire began, and fortunately, no injuries have been reported.
The last person to leave the building was said to have departed around 6 p.m. on Friday.
The fire’s spread was fueled by dry, windy conditions that also triggered several brush fires in the area.
Mutual aid from neighboring departments in Monroe and Derby helped prevent the flames from reaching nearby homes.
“A few little embers are all it took to start probably a half-acre fire just down the street from here,” said Shelton Assistant Fire Chief Bob Finta. “. That’s why we’re keeping water flowing on the building right now. Try to keep any embers or sparks from flying off as we get near daybreak.”
Firefighters are still working to contain the fire and prevent further brush fires in the area.
Officials are now investigating the cause of the fire.
The Fire Marshal’s Office is expected to take over the investigation.
