Prithvi Shaw and Yashasvi Jaiswal, two of the brightest talents to have emerged from Mumbai in recent times, have had a contrasting India career trajectory. Shaw made a blazing entry to Test cricket and scored a century on debut before his international career nosedived. On the other hand, Jaiswal’s rise has been meteoric with the left-handed opener scoring truckload of runs.
Shaw’s career has been impacted by inconsistency, fitness and disciplinary concerns. Recently, he was dropped from Mumbai’s Vijay Hazare Trophy squad on similar issues raising fresh concerns over the direction his career is headed towards.
India batter Shreyas Iyer has lavished high praise on Shaw and advised the 25-year-old to focus on his “work ethic” to put his career back on track.
“Both (Shaw and Jaiswal) are exceptionally talented players. The way they time the ball, it’s pleasing to the eyes. Prithvi Shaw also started on a great note. He’s got a great blessing of timing the ball and scoring runs at a great pace. And all of us in the team feel that he is blessed with that phenomenal talent. So, he just has to focus on his work ethic and everything else will follow. He’s God gifted,” Iyer told The Indian Express.
Since making his India debut in 2018, Shaw has played five Tests, six ODIs and a lone T20I. He’s scored a combined 528 runs including a century and two fifties.
On the other hand, Jaiswal made his debut in 2013 and has since played 19 Tests and 23 T20Is in which he has scored a combined 2521 runs.
Iyer feels that Jaiswal has a “strong personality” and is “very competitive”.
“Yashasvi Jaiswal, on the other hand, knows exactly what he’s doing. And he knows his standing at the moment. So he doesn’t need any advice. He’s a strong personality. He believes in himself a lot. And he’s very competitive in nature. So, whatever he’s doing at the moment, he just has to focus on that. And obviously, sky’s the limit for him,” Iyer said.
