HONOLULU — The Hawaii women’s basketball team made UC San Diego its latest prisoner in a 94-by-50 cell.
UH was far from stellar in shooting and ball handling, but locked down UCSD, a potent scoring team, for its 14th straight win in a 49-44 contest on Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
A crowd of 2,140 (2,781 tickets issued) saw UH (20-6, 14-2 Big West) shoot just 31.9% but hold UCSD to 24.3%. The Tritons (14-14, 10-6) missed 45 of their first 54 shots before scrambling for putbacks and turnovers late in a 21-point fourth quarter.
UH overcame 22 turnovers; UCSD did not fully capitalize with a 13-3 advantage on the giveaways.
Lily Wahinekapu scored a game-high 13 points and MeiLani McBee added 11. McBee shot 3-for-6 from 3, including the 200th long-range hit of her career. She is five 3s from tying the program record held by Amy Atwell.
Sumayah Sugapong and Gracie Gallegos led UCSD with 12 points apiece.
UH is one win short of its longest winning streak of the 13-year Laura Beeman era, 15 games in 2014-15. UH plays at UC Riverside and UC Davis next week.
