Harvard’s golf program and some art studios relocated to a new Allston facility to allow the construction of the American Repertory Theater’s Goel Center for Creativity and Performance.
The programs were formerly housed in a single-story building at 175 N. Harvard St. in Allston, which was demolished to construct the Goel Center, Harvard spokesperson Amy Kamosa wrote in an emailed statement to The Crimson.
To accommodate the displaced programs, the University converted a storage facility at 92 Seattle St. The renovations will feature indoor practice space for Harvard Golf and new academic studio space for the Art Film and Visual Studies department, according to Kamosa.
Fred Schernecker ’89, director of Harvard Golf, said in an interview with The Crimson that the new facility will allow Harvard Golf to have more players training simultaneously.
“We kind of maxed out at around five or six team members in the space at one time” with the old facility, Schernecker said. “With the expansion of the space, now we can get eight or nine players in the space at one time comfortably being able to practice.”
The new building — jointly selected by Harvard Athletics and Harvard Real Estate — is located near Harvard’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, which Schernecker said is a better location for athletes.
“It’s also a nice benefit that it’s right next to the Science and Engineering Complex, where it’s a great place to study and also take study breaks from,” said Schnernecker.
Renovations at 92 Seattle St. include “replacing windows, creating new accessible entries, improved exterior envelope and insulation, updated infrastructure systems, removal of a loading dock, and new landscaping,” per Kamosa.
Schernecker said that the building must also be adapted for the needs of golfers, taking into consideration ceiling height and the noise of hitting golf balls.
“The space needs to have relatively high ceilings in it,” he said, “and then enough space within that to accommodate the chipping green and putting area and the hitting base.”
The new facility will feature a number of specialty equipment, including Trackman launch monitors that provide distance and direction information on athletes’ swings.
“The putting green and chipping area allows our players to again practice year round on their skills, whether it’s during the winter months or whether it’s during times when we wouldn’t be outside,” Schernecker said.
