The $100,000 Gun Runner at Fair Grounds on Saturday is the first of four Kentucky Derby points races that will be run at the New Orleans track. A field of five 2-year-olds will race 1 1/16 miles and, thus, all of them will get some of the 10-5-3-2-1 qualifying points.
The Gun Runner had its inaugural running in 2021, and the winner that year was Epicenter, who went on to dominate the Derby trail races at Fair Grounds. He was named the champion 3-year-old of 2022 with second-place finishes in the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness and ultimately $2.9 million in earnings.
Here is a full-field analysis for the Gun Runner with the official track morning-line odds. The race is scheduled for 4 p.m. EST and is listed as race 7 of 12.
1. Built, 7-2. Hard Spun – Wayne Catalano / Corie Lanerie – 2: 1-0-1 – $64,204. In his debut Built was third after he was moved up from a disqualification, and he was behind the highly regarded East Avenue in an August race at Ellis Park. In October he beat a large field of 11 at Keeneland after pressing the pace going seven furlongs. Win contender.
2. Render Judgment, 4-1. Blame – Kenny McPeek / Brian Hernandez Jr. – 3: 1-1-0 – $99,110. Render Judgment made the first start of his career and finished second behind Built. Since then, he ran two more times. He broke his maiden at Churchill Downs going two turns with a stalking trip, which prompted his first try on the Derby trail. Built was fifth in the Kentucky Jockey Club (G2) and now will make his fourth start in just over two months. Toss.
3. Magnitude, 2-1. Not This Time – Steve Asmussen / Jose Ortiz – 4: 2-0-0 – $123,665. Magnitude was early to race with his first start in June at Churchill when he was fourth. He won on the front end by almost six lengths in July at Ellis Park going seven furlongs. On the Derby trail in the Iroquois (G3) he faded after flashing early speed. After two months off, Magnitude came back to win an allowance around two turns while hard held in a five-horse field. Use underneath.
4. Chris’s Revenge, 6-1. Instagrand – Brittany Russell / Jaime Torres – 3: 1-0-0 – $45,440. Chris’s Revenge made his first two starts at Aqueduct in an auction-price restricted maiden claimer, and he got his initial victory after pressing the pace in a field of 12. Last month he was fourth in an allowance going the one-turn mile at Churchill. Toss.
5. Admiral Dennis, 9-5. Constitution – Brad Cox / Luis Saez – 2: 1-0-1 – $81,000. Admiral Dennis was the favorite in both starts at Churchill, which would be expected coming from the barn of Brad Cox. Cox is seeking his first victory on the road to the 2025 Kentucky Derby. Admiral Dennis had to check in traffic in the upper stretch in his debut. With a clear trip last month, he pressed the pace and drew off to win by 3 1/2 lengths, earning the highest speed figure in this field. Top choice.
Summary: The pace projector shows that Built and Magnitude will get clear of the others while setting the pace in this small field, and that gives them an advantage. Magnitude is the only horse with two wins and also one of only two runners who have a victory racing around two turns. Admiral Dennis impressed in his maiden win, beating a return winner at Churchill.
The Gun Runner is part of an all-stakes Pick 5 that begins in race 5. With such a small field the focus of betting on the Gun Runner should be in horizontal wagers. Admiral Dennis is the top choice and fits as a single in that Pick 5.
