Greg Rusedski has identified things Novak Djokovic can do to have a successful season.
Though Djokovic won the Olympic gold medal, by his lofty standards, 2024 was a poor one for the 24-time Grand Slam winner.
The Serbian has claimed just one title so far this season and lost the World number one ranking to Jannik Sinner.
He also battled with knee injury for the half of the campaign, and he was still wearing the protective sleeve over it as recently as his last appearance at the Six Kings Slam.
Djokovic will aim to be at full health come the start of the 2025 season as he bids to add more Grand Slam titles to his glittering résumé.
2024 marked the first season since 2017 that Novak Djokovic went through an entire campaign without winning a Grand Slam.
Furthermore, he has just one win from four combined matches against Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, his two biggest challenges at present.
Things are only going to get harder for Djokovic as the younger players get stronger and he gets older. But Rusedski thinks the 37-year-old can never be counted out and has suggested what he should do in the offseason.
“The one thing I would say with Novak that I would love to see is him to hire a world class coach,” Rusedski told Tennis Channel. “He has a physical trainer and physio which he’s had on his team, so that’s set.
“The world class coach is only there to give him strong opinions, I think. Because what are you going to tell a guy who has won 24 majors and Olympic gold? You need somebody who is going to have a strong voice in the camp and work together with Novak.”
Following Djokovic’s run to the Shanghai Masters final, his schedule for the rest of the season remains unclear. Djokovic was due to compete in the Paris Masters, but after a late pullout the only remaining tournament for Djokovic’s season could be the ATP Finals should he qualify.
The former World number one is on the cusp of making it to Turin once again. But if he were to book his spot in the tournament, it is unknown if he will choose to play, especially given his comments earlier in the season about the tournament not being a major goal for him in 2024.
This is something Rusedski is unsure about, as he believes Djokovic may choose to pull out of the ATP Finals.
“For me if Novak is 100% healthy and gets fit, he is in the mix to win every major again,” he added. “Don’t discount Novak. Health is your wealth, the older you become the smarter you have to become and he knows these things.
“He has looked at Federer and Rafa, he has looked at the competition, and knows he has to change a few things to beat the likes of Sinner and Alcaraz back to back.
“Off season to me is huge and the longer he can make his off season the better off he will be for 2025. I will be surprised if he plays in Turin or plays any more tennis this season.”
