Gray Stone Day senior Hannah Lineberry holds a six-stroke lead over the rest of the field after the first day of competition at the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1A/2A girls golf state championship at Sapona Golf Club in Lexington.
Lineberry managed a pair of birdies in her opening round, posting a score of 75, which is 4-over par.
There are three players tied for second place after the first day. Jackson Day School sophomore Landry Hamm, Christ the King senior Malerie Lague, and Pine Lake Prep sophomore Paisley Freda each finished the first day with a 10-over par 81.
Freda helped lead Pine Lake Prep to a first day lead in the team standings, although the race for the team title is very tight.
Pine Lake Prep’s team posted a first day score of 269, which is 56-over par. The next five teams are all within 14 points of one another.
East Rutherford is second with a score of 275, just six strokes behind Pine Lake Prep. Avery County is third with a score of 277, followed by Christ the King at 278. East Surry (280) and West Lincoln (283) are also not far away from first place.
Pine Lake Prep is the reigning 1A/2A state champion.
The final day of competition will take place on Tuesday in Lexington.
