MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) – An impending winter weather advisory is threatening a popular outdoor activity across the Grand Strand.
On Thursday, some golf courses in Myrtle Beach were preparing to handle the nasty stretch of weather by “teeing up” for the temps.
Myrtle Beach National showed WMBF News firsthand how they protect their green when the temps drop. They spent the day tarping part of their course to trap heat.
”It was kind of an easy decision for us to get the covers on, to be on the safe side,” said Myrtle Beach National Directory of Agronomy, Kevin Przybylski.
Przybylski explained a major freeze and grass loss in 2017 got his staff to invest tens of thousands of dollars in course covers. Something they’ll need to use in the coming days to protect their links from Mother Nature.
“Some courses got hurt worse than others,” said Przybylski. “To be on the safe side, we’re going to go ahead and cover some of our weaker greens.”
Myrtle Beach National is prepared and staying open, but the temperature drop has caused more than a dozen other local courses to shut down. It’s a reality some visitors hit on.
“We heard there’s many other courses closed. We got lucky here,” said visitor, Mitch Gelbaugh.
Gelbaugh and his friends were from Pennsylvania and they weren’t fazed by the frigid temps.
“We’re hacking the ball really bad around this course right here,” said visitor Jim Price.
“We’re out here having a great time,” said Gary Stackfield.
However, Przybylski said not all golfers were as brave as the visitors from Pennsylvania, as many players canceled because of the weather.
“It’s not the most fun in the world, but we had about half of our golfers cancel today just because it was too cold for them,” said Przybylski.
The visitors from the northeast offered this advice to their fellow golf enthusiasts.
“Layer up, come on out, and play some golf,” said Stackfield.
Myrtle Beach National is planning on staying open, but check your course before you head out to tee time.
