The men are playing in their first Masters 1000 event of the season, while the women are competing in their third following the WTA 1000 tournaments in Qatar and Dubai.

While the game’s top players have yet to even begin their campaign, one big name has already packed her bags as her time at Indian Wells is now over.

Naomi Osaka dumped out of the Indian Wells Masters in first round

Including defending champion Iga Swiatek, five women players who have previously lifted the Indian Wells title were in the draw for 2025.

One of them is Naomi Osaka, who won the trophy back in 2018, the year she beat Serena Williams to win the first of her four Grand Slams.

Osaka opened her campaign against Camila Osorio, in what was her first competitive match since January’s Australian Open.

The 27-year-old had yet to lose a completed match in 2025, as both her defeats came due to injury retirements.

But that was not the case in Indian Wells as Osorio stunned Osaka 6-4, 6-4 to move into the next round, and the disappointed former World number one delivered a brutally honest verdict of her performance on social media.

“Worst match I’ve ever played in my life,” Osaka wrote. “Wow, I’m so sorry to everyone who watched that.”

Both Osaka and Osorio came into Indian Wells after recovering from injuries.

This was their second meeting against each other and Osorio beat Osaka for the first time after securing one break of serve in each set.

The 23-year-old became the first Colombian player to beat a former World number one since the rankings were first published in 1975.

Furthermore, Osorio earned her first main draw victory at Indian Wells and she will face ASB Classic champion Clara Tauson in the next round.
