It’s time to look at an important issue that seems to be flying under the radar in New York – problem gambling. Governor Kathy Hochul is expressing her concern about this problem and wants to support those that are struggling with gambling addiction.
Why all the fuss? Here are the stats. Did you know that over 4% of New Yorkers are dealing with gambling addiction? It’s not just a city thing either because problem gambling is hitting other areas really hard too. This is mostly due to the easy access that anyone over 21 has to betting venues and online platforms.
Governor Hochul is making March the official Problem Gambling Awareness Month, and she’s not just paying lip service. She wants to raise awareness and make sure there are options for those who need a hand.
Addressing problem gambling isn’t just about numbers and percentages. It’s about real people dealing with a very real issue. Earlier this month, she lit up 14 New York State landmarks in acknowledgement of problem gambling.
Governor Hochul wants to start a conversation and make it okay to talk about this problem and seek help. She wants to spread the word and let everyone know that there is hope and help available.
By coming together to tackle problem gambling, we can create a supportive community for those who need it most. Those seeking help can visit NYProblemGamblingHelp.org or call New York State’s confidential HOPEline at 1-877-8-HOPENY (1-877-846-7369) or text HOPENY at 467369.
