Despite coming up short, Maverick McNealy helped himself on Sunday at the Genesis Invitational.
McNealy was in line to secure his second career PGA TOUR win, but Ludvig Aberg snatched the victory from his hands over the last six holes.
McNealy stayed hot into the final round, making six birdies in the opening nine holes, but Aberg birdied four of his last six to finish 12-under-par, one stroke ahead of McNealy.
While it was a disappointing result for McNealy, he opened up a lot of eyes over the weekend.
Including Justin Thomas, who played alongside McNealy on Sunday.
Thomas was so impressed with McNealy, he took to X to highlight just how incredible his performance truly was.
‘Just went back thru the day after thinking about that round by Mav I got to witness first hand today,’ Thomas wrote.
‘If we would’ve played a match. I would have been 1 up thru 1….then lost the next 10 consecutive holes to holes 9&8 holy smokes!!!!!’
Thomas finished tied for ninth and shot 6-under-par.
McNealy saw Thomas’ post, and had quite the cheeky response.
‘All I saw was a best-ball 60 between us…,’ McNealy replied.
‘Maybe that could come in handy in NY sometime this fall.’
McNealy was not-so-subtly hinting at the Ryder Cup that takes place in Farmingdale, New York in late September.
McNealy jumped eight spots after the weekend, to move to fifth on the list of eligible players.
The top six automatically make the team.
Thomas is currently 12th.
Whether the two make the team remains to be seen.
McNealy can take solace in knowing that although he missed out on the $4million purse on Sunday, he still went home with $2million.
However, that is barely a drop in the McNealy family bucket.
McNealy’s father, Scott, is the co-founder of technology giant Sun Microsystems and has a net worth of $1 billion.
The PGA golfer is the heir to his father’s fortune.
He is the richest professional golfer on the tour, outside of Tiger Woods.
It’s clear McNealy doesn’t compete for the money, but if this weekend was any indication of his future in the sport, he’s only going to add to his enormous wealth.
