GolfPass released its list of the “Top 25 Public Golf Courses in Ohio” — a lineup that features some familiar and not so familiar links.
The top course? Ashland Golf Club in Ashland.
The Ashland Golf Club — which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2023 — is an 18-hole, par 72 championship course that measures 6,699 yards. It was originally designed as a nine-hole course by two-time British Open winner Willie Park Jr. in 1921. It was expanded to 18 holes in 1973.
Ashland also was the only course in Ohio that made the list of GolfPass’ “Top 50 Public Golf Courses in the U.S.”
The Ohio list was released this week, along with lists for every other state.
“Now that we’ve revealed the full contingent of U.S. state and national lists for 2025, golfers can now use them to plan where to play virtually anywhere in America,” Jason Scott Deegan, managing editor of GolfPass, said in a prepared statement. “Golfers’ Choice 2025 is a great resource for finding public courses — often very affordable options — in all corners of the country.”
Here’s GolfPass’ ranking of the top 10 public golf courses in the Buckeye State:

GolfPass — launched in 2019 by NBC Sports and golfer Rory McIlroy — offers golf instruction, savings on tee times and golf videos. It ranks courses on everything from value to layout to the friendliest staff.
It generates its annual “Golfers’ Choice” lists through recreational golfer reviews from the previous year. Last year, there were nearly 275,000 reviews. Nearly 3,400 courses received the minimum 10 reviews in 2024 to qualify for consideration.
In Ohio, 180 golf courses were evaluated, with 4,770 reviews.
