A man died after a tree fell on him at The Mook at Alderbrook golf course in Tillamook County, Ore., the golf course said in a Facebook statement issued on Oct. 17.
Bob Dunn, 68, was struck and pinned down by an alder tree that was roughly 20 inches in diameter. “That tree came down without any wind. Just a crack, and boom, it was down,” Hugh Ragle, who was playing golf with Dunn and Dunn’s son, told The Oregonian. “We were just in the wrong spot at the wrong time.”
Firefighters arrived at the scene and used a chainsaw on the tree to free Dunn. He was treated on the scene for extensive injuries before being transported to Tillamook Adventist Health. He died at the hospital “due to the extent of injuries,” Tillamook Fire District said, per KOIN 6 News.
“Our heartfelt thoughts go out to the family and friends of this unfortunate, tragic event,” the district continued.
The Mook at Alderbrook managing partners Patrick Zweifel and Michael Freeman also paid tribute to Dunn in their Oct. 17 statement.
“It is with heavy hearts that we inform you of a tragic accident on our golf course involving one of our cherished and faithful golfers, Bob Dunn,” the statement reads. “We are deeply saddened by this news and extend our sincerest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
“His presence on the course brought joy and camaraderie, and he will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him,” their statement continues “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, offering them comfort and strength as they navigate through this unimaginable loss.”
Zweifel said he purchased the course in 2022, and at the time, maintenance crews removed approximately 100 dangerous trees, per The Oregonian. The tree that killed Dunn did not seem dangerous at the time, but now Zweifel is reassessing.
Dunn was a resident of Tillamook, Ore., and San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua. He moved to South America after retiring from NW Natural Gas Company and stayed in Nicaragua for several months each year, the outlet adds.
