MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Max Green, Pierce Grieve and Kaleb Wilson earned victories to lead the West Virginia University golf team to a 3-2-0 win against UCF on Tuesday at the Big 12 Match Play Championship at The Clubs at Houston Oaks in Hockley, Texas, on Monday.
All three golfers secured 3&2 wins against UCF with Grieve defeating Marc Keller, Green downing Clemente Silva and Wilson defeating Chase Haygood.
“I’m proud of our fight in the afternoon to win the match versus UCF,” coach Sean Covich said. “We were behind in almost every match and hung in there and got the win. I’m proud of Max, he’s gaining some momentum with his game again. Kaleb has been a leader for us this week, and all this semester honestly.”
In the morning match against Houston, WVU fell, 3-1-1. Green defeated Laurenz Schiergen, 2UP, while Wilson tied Jacob Borow.
“It was a disappointing result against Houston, but Kaleb and Max got some points for us,” Covich said. “Todd was so close, felt bad for him as one putt goes his way it’s a different result, but that’s match play.”
The Mountaineers will close out the Big 12 Match Play Championship in the placing round on Wednesday morning against Colorado.
