WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Men’s Golf played to a 3.5-3.5 tie against DePaul in their second day of action at BIG EAST Match Play. The Wildcats finished 0-1-2 in their three matches to begin the season, finishing seventh.
Joshua Lavely fell just short of an undefeated weekend, tying his Blue Demon opponent in Alex Vekich. The junior birdied two holes in the round, one coming on hole six, while he was losing 2&1 with three holes remaining, extending the contest. Lavely shot a 79 (+7) in round three, including one over 36 on the front nine.
Nathan Marion held an incredibly close match in round three, ultimately falling short with DePaul’s Hank Schaefer coming out on top 1Up. Marion shot 75 (+3) in his only full trip around the course this weekend, assisted by shooting one over combined on par four and five holes.
Jackson Lehner birdied two holes in round three but was unable to capture his second win of the weekend, losing 6&4 to the Blue Demon’s Ryder Henares.
Gus Vickers starred on day two, playing his best round of the season so far. He won his match 4&2, while birdying five holes and shooting 62 (-3) across 16 holes. Vickers shot par across the back nine and shot 26 (-3) across the front nine until his win was called.
Vibhav Alokam recorded his first win of the weekend in round three, beating Rohan Gopaldas 2Up. The freshman thwarted his opponent’s comeback attempt on the front nine by shooting two under as Gopaldas birdied four of his last six holes. Alokam shot either par, or birdied his final 11 holes, helping fend off his opposition. He played the full 18, shooting 71 (-1) on the day. He tied for sixth in the field shooting even on par three holes throughout the entire event.
Matt Zerfass picked up a 2&1 victory, shooting 74 (+6) through 17 holes. He gained the lead on the opening hole and never relinquished it, holding as lead as high as 4Up at the turn. The junior birdied his third to last hole and shot par on six of his final seven to maintain his lead on the front nine.
Ryan Pamer was unable to come away victorious in the Wildcats’ opening match. He birdied six holes, most among the Wildcats in round three and shot 66 (-2) through 17 holes. Pamer fell to DePaul’s Dominic Lucchesi 2&1, who shot 64 (-4). He was able to stay at the top of the overall leaderboards as he finished in the top 10 on par four and five holes. He shot one over on par four holes, tying him for fifth, and six under on par fives, placing third among all competitors. Pamer was also able to fall into the top 10 shooting 11 birdies, tying for sixth.
