Villanova currently ranks seventh after going 0-1-1 on day one. They lost the tiebreaker against St. John’s and will play for seventh place on day two against the #7 seed, the DePaul Blue Demons.
The first BIG EAST golfer to tee off in this tournament was Villanova’s Ryan Pamer, who cruised to a 70 (+2) through 17 holes in round one. He kept it close but ultimately fell to Patrick Adler of Marquette by a score of 2&1, a golfer who ranks in the top 40 nationally. Against St. John’s, Pamer was able to come out on top, defeating his opponent 2&1, as he recorded four birdies on the back nine. He tied for the lead among all golfers in the event, shooting even on all par four holes, and finished tied for seventh in the tournament going three under on par fives.
Matt Zerfass shot nine over through 13 holes his first time around against Marquette. During his second trip, he shot three over (75), tying him with his opponent from St. John’s, Joseph Dolezal. After bogeying three of his first four holes in his second matchup, he was able to either birdie or shoot par on all but one the rest of the round.
Vibhav Alokam was not able to come out on top in either match on day one but remained close to his opponent through the entire 36 holes. He shot 67 through 16 holes in his first match, shooting one over on the front nine, but was not able to pull out the win, losing 2&1. Against St. John’s, he fell 3&2 to David Mlynek.
Gus Vickers was unable to capture a win on his first day of action in BIG EAST play. In his first round, he played against Marquette’s Ryan Banas, the younger brother of Villanova Golf alum, Reb Banas. Vickers was defeated 2&1 by Banas after shooting a 74 through 17 holes. Against the Red Storm, he suffered another close defeat while shooting 72 through 17.
Jackson Lehner went 1-1 on the first day of the event, as he was able to rebound from an early loss to defeat his opponent later in the day. Against Marquette, the senior fell 7&6 and shot 55 (+7) through 12 holes. In his match against St. John’s and Frank Wu, he won 3&1, shooting a 33 on the front nine, including two birdies.
Nathan Marion was one of seven golfers and the only Wildcat to record an eagle on day one, doing so on a par 4, 425-yard hole. He shot a 69 (+1) through 17 holes but fell 2&1 to his Marquette opponent Vinny Cervantes. Against St. John’s, he lost 5&4, shooting a 62 (+8) through 12 holes.
Joshua Lavely had an incredible performance on day one, being the only Wildcat to go undefeated. The late add was able to score the Wildcats a win in round one, shooting 51 (-1) through 13 holes, ultimately winning 6&5. Lavely shot 77 (+5) against St. John’s and Doug Beney, while shooting one over on the back nine to win 2Up.
