When you win your first national championship in a decade, you are allowed to be late to your postgame media obligations.
At least that is what coach Ryan Day and Ohio State might use to explain their tardiness late Monday night after defeating No. 7 Notre Dame 34-23 in the College Football Playoff national championship game.
As Day and some Buckeyes players were on their way to the postgame press conference room at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, they hit a bit of a road bump as a worker crashed their golf cart into a wall outside the locker room.
Running back Quinshon Judkins helped lift the Buckeyes to their ninth claimed national championship in program history with one of his best games of the season. The Ole Miss transfer finished with 121 total scrimmage yards and three touchdowns on Monday.
The Buckeyes sealed the victory and held off a late surge from Notre Dame with a 33-yard field goal from kicker Jayden Fielding to go up 34-23 with 28 seconds remaining in the game.
Quarterback Will Howard set a new College Football Playoff record for consecutive completions to start a national championship game, as he started the game 13-for-13 passing for 138 yards and a touchdown.
With its victory Monday, Ohio State became the second team in the AP Poll era to win its final four games of the season all against AP Top-10 teams, per ESPN’s broadcast. The Buckeyes also knocked off five AP Top-5 teams on the season, which also is the most in the AP Poll era, which started in 1936.
