Memphis Commercial Appeal columns — what is the ‘What’s That’ business feature
Our “What’s That?” column aims to answer that very question about an ongoing construction project in Memphis.
A global technology company announced Monday it plans to invest $120 million and create 250 new jobs at its North Mississippi and Tennessee operations.
Switzerland-based ABB is making a $40 million investment to expand its Senatobia, Mississippi, facility, which will create 200 new jobs, according to a news release. The company is also investing $80 million to build a new 320,000-square-foot advanced manufacturing facility in Selmer, Tennessee, and create 50 new jobs there.
The Senatobia and Selmer facilities make electrification products such as circuit breakers, busway and busplug products. which are essential for getting electricity to its final destination.
“Demand is increasing steadily for advanced electrification technologies, driven by growth in key sectors including data centers and utilities. Today’s announcement will support our future growth in the U.S., ABB’s largest global market,” ABB CEO Morten Wierod said in a news release. “Our new facilities in Selmer and Senatobia will keep our U.S. customers at the cutting edge of the energy transition, and help them meet their performance, productivity and energy efficiency goals.”
ABB touted its $40 million investment will double the size of its existing manufacturing site in Senatobia. The new facility is expected to open in the second quarter of 2026. Additionally, the 200 new jobs will grow the workforce in the Senatobia facility to more than 1,000 employees.
ABB said the increased footprint will allow the Senatobia facility to meet increasing demand for advanced low voltage circuit breakers from customers across North America. ABB’s industrial circuit breakers provide the higher power reliability that is essential for data center expansion, advanced manufacturing facilities, and renewable energy microgrids.
Expanding production will also support growing demand from customers across North America who are upgrading their aging power infrastructure and expanding their operations, according to ABB.
ABB’s $80 million investment in Selmer will include building a new 320,000-square-foot facility. The new facility is projected to open in the fourth quarter of 2026. The additional new 50 skilled jobs will increase ABB’s Selmer workforce by more than 25%.
Replacing ABB’s existing Selmer operations is expected to increase production capacity by more than 50%, according to the news release.
The new factory will produce essential electrical distribution equipment for large-scale industrial and technology-driven facilities, including data centers, factories and high-rise residential and office spaces where consistent, high-quality power is critical.
ABB is a global tech leader in electrification and automation. The company has existed for more than 140 years and employs around 110,000 people worldwide. ABB has nearly 40 manufacturing, distribution and operational facilities across 20 U.S. states. ABB’s revenue in the U.S. was close to $9 million in 2024.
In the past three years, ABB has invested more than $500 million in its U.S. business, including opening a new $100 million manufacturing facility and innovation laboratory for industrial electric drives in New Berlin, Wisconsin, in October 2024. A new $40 million ABB factory will open in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in April 2025, to manufacture the latest technologies for power grid hardening and resilience.
