The American family still own a majority stake in United having only sold 25 percent of shares to Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos last year.

The latest financial accounts show that United are riddled with Glazer debt that has continued to grow since they took charge in 2005. The BBC report that United have reached an estimated £1 billion paid in interest payments during their 20 years in charge.

Ineos are now trying to solve the Glazers’ mess with brutal cost-cutting methods that are taking a huge toll on the morale around Old Trafford and Carrington. Reports from America suggest that United fans are not alone in their hatred towards the Glazers.

Glazers slammed by Tampa Bay Buccaneers report card

As well as owning a controlling share of United, the Glazers also own NFL franchise Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who were eliminated from the play-offs in the Wild Card round in the latest 2024 season.

Last month, Mark Ogden explained that United players have been kept away from their sister team in America as the Glazers did not want them to see how good the training facilities were. Carrington’s facilities have been criticised for being outdated, and it came down to Ineos to invest in new training upgrades.

However, it seems the Glazers are still not liked by those inside the Buccaneers after a damning report card on their ownership.

The 2025 NFL report cards were published on Thursday and it doesn’t reflect well on the Glazers.

As pointed out by Greg Auman, the Glazers got a D+ grade for ownership, ranking them 27th out of 32 NFL teams.

The report card reads: “The players feel that the Glazer family slightly contributes to a positive team culture, a rank of 27 out of 32.

Additionally: “The players feel that the Glazer family is somewhat committed to building a competitive team, a rank of 26 of the 32 NFL owners.”

They are certainly views that will be shared by United players and fans in Manchester.

Glazer problems extend beyond just Man United

This is not the first time the Glazer family has been criticised. The results of the 2024 Tampa Bay Buccaneers report card also slammed their ownership.

Criticisms from last year’s card included:

• The major issue brought up by players is a lack of cleanliness. The players say the locker room is not clean, constantly smelly and has a persistent bug issue in the showers. They also mention that the sauna is dirty and/or moldy, small and constantly breaking down.
• The players feel the locker room is old, outdated and needs to be renovated

Those exact criticisms also apply to Old Trafford, with Ineos now considering new stadium options.

Old Trafford was neglected by the Glazers throughout their 20 years in charge of United, with the stadium frequently leaking alongside reports of a mice infestation.

Earlier this month, it was revealed that the Glazers abandoned a cricket takeover amid fear of fan backlash. Their record at the Buccaneers and United suggests they should stay far away from any other teams.

The Glazers could complete a full sale of United in the future. If they do, Ratcliffe and Ineos have first refusal to buy the shares if they are put up for sale.
