MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – The brand new girls flag football team at Percy Julian High school will play its first game Wednesday. As of this year, the Alabama High School Athletic Association sanctioned girls flag football as a championship sport.

Girls flag football has been a sport at many high schools for several years, operating independently. Now those teams have a shared revenue process and a postseason tournament with a recognized state champion.

Flag football was sanctioned as an AHSAA sport in 2021. The decision to sanction it as a championship sport allows the creation of divisions and brings it up to the level of other championship sports that the AHSAA offers.

A total of 89 schools declared teams for this season. The AHSAA central board separated them into two classifications – 1A through 5A and 6A through 7A. There will 16 areas for both classifications with 32 total teams making the playoffs in both.

Percy Julian’s first game of the season will be played at Capitol Height Middle School at 6:00 p.m.

The AHSAA also sanctioned girls wrestling as a championship sport starting this year.
