Georgia rallied from a five-run deficit to walk off Florida Gulf Coast 10-9 on Friday at Foley Field. The Bulldogs, now 10-1, extended their winning streak to seven games.
Florida Gulf Coast capitalized on an early error and key hits to take a 5-0 lead in the first inning. Sophomore Daniel Jackson ignited Georgia’s comeback with solo home runs in the third and fifth innings, narrowing the gap to 5-2. His third-inning home run traveled 465 feet, the longest by a Bulldog this season.
“Our offense today, I don’t know what they ended up with, 15, 16, 17 hits something like that, good job to them,” said head coach Wes Johnson. “What a night Daniel Jackson had. That’s what it takes. When you go down, you need somebody to step up and calm everything down.”
Redshirt junior Eric Hammond pitched two and one-third scoreless innings in relief, striking out six, matching his career high. He entered the game with a 5-0 deficit in the third inning.
Georgia took its first lead in the sixth inning, scoring five runs with two outs. Senior Robbie Burnett delivered a two-run single, tying the game 7-7. Moments later, sophomore Tre Phelps hit a two-run single, giving Georgia a 9-7 lead.
Florida Gulf Coast tied the game 9-9 in the ninth inning. With tension mounting, sophomore Jordan Stephens entered the game and recorded the final out with a 100 mph strikeout, earning his first win of the season.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, with the bases loaded and no outs, senior Slate Alford grounded to first base. A wild throw home allowed freshman pinch-runner Erik Parker to score the game-winning run.
“We need to come out and play clean baseball in the first three innings,” Johnson said. “It’s something I just challenged our guys with right there. Just come out and play clean baseball to start a game. There’s a lot of positives to it. It’s like they got us to a nine-count right there in the first and we got up off the mat and we finished the fight in 15 rounds and got the decision.”
Jackson finished 4-for-5 with three RBIs.
“Honestly, today was one of those days where everything’s just kind of clicking. It just feels like you can’t miss,” Jackson said.
Florida Gulf Coast had 11 hits and committed three errors. Georgia had 15 hits and committed two errors.
Georgia continues the series against Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday with a doubleheader. Game one is scheduled for 2 p.m., and game two, a seven-inning contest, will begin approximately 45 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
