The Georgia Bulldogs got a chance at a tune-up on Saturday in an exhibition against Charlotte with a little over two weeks until the start of the 2024-25 season. If Saturday’s action was any indication, the Bulldogs are in good shape as they look to make Mike White‘s third season in Athens a worthwhile one.
Georgia handled Charlotte in an 86-59 road victory. The Bulldogs shot nearly 59% from the field, brought down 37 rebounds, and scored via 19 assists in the win.
“We got better today,” White said. “There are a lot of positives we can take, and there are a lot of things we can clean up of course. That’s why we play these games. We’re appreciative to Charlotte for giving us the opportunity to play in front of a road environment. I thought we got balanced efforts from a bunch of different guys. I really like where we’re at in terms of culture. This is something we can build upon. It’s really, really early, and we’ve got a ways to go.”
The Bulldogs doubled up the 49ers in the first half by a 36-18 margin. Clemson transfer RJ Godfrey led Georgia in scoring during that first half with 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field. He also had 3 steals in the first half as part of an afternoon in which the Bulldogs logged 14.
Freshman Asa Newell led Georgia in scoring with 20 points on a 9-of-10 showing from the field. He also had 5 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal. Silas Demary Jr.. contributed 15 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 assist, and Godfrey ended up with 13 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals, and 1 assist. Ten Bulldogs wound up scoring in the win.
Somto Cyril led Georgia with 7 rebounds and 3 blocks. Vanderbilt transfer Tyrin Lawrence delivered 5 assists with no turnovers.
Georgia was productive on defense against Charlotte and held the 49ers to 43% from the field and just 14.2% (2-of-14) from 3-point range. The Bulldogs forced 18 turnovers in the victory.
Perhaps the only negative for Georgia in the scrimmage was the team’s 12 turnovers.
The Bulldogs are back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 29 when they host UCF in an exhibition the proceeds of which will go to UGA Miracle. UGA Miracle, which is celebrating its 30th year at the University of Georgia in 2024-25, is the largest student-run philanthropy in the state of Georgia. Founded on the principle of making miracles happen, UGA Miracle is dedicated to improving the lives of children and families battling pediatric illness. In 2024, the organization achieved unprecedented success, raising $1,075,281.24.
“At UGA Miracle, we are more than just a student organization – we are a movement, a family, and a force for good,” the organization’s website stats. “Every dollar we raise, every event we host, and every smile we ignite contributes to a brighter future for children facing medical challenges.”
