Georgia football will be thinner at wide receiver Saturday for its game at Alabama.
Sophomore London Humphreys, a transfer from Vanderbilt, is sidelined because of mononucleosis, according to a person with direct knowledge of the situation. The person spoke to the Athens Banner-Herald on condition of anonymity because Georgia had not updated Humphreys’ status for the game.
“Yeah, we’ll see when the reports come out,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said on the weekly SEC teleconference referring to the league’s availability report that will be released Wednesday night. “We still don’t have a lot of verification on some things. That’s what we do the injury reports for.”
The 6-foot-2, 197-pound Humphreys has two catches for 63 yards this season including a 40-yard touchdown against Clemson in the 34-3 season-opening win on Aug. 31.
No timeline is known yet on how long he may be out. Dawgs 247 was the first to report the Humphreys news.
Humphreys started at wide receiver in the Bulldogs’ last game against Kentucky but has not had a catch the past two games.
Humphreys has played 62 total snaps this season including 22 in the last game for Georgia, but hasn’t been targeted in the passing game since week one, according to Pro Football Focus.
Humphreys had 22 catches for 439 yards and 4 touchdowns last season as a freshman at Vanderbilt.
Georgia passed for 160 yards and no touchdowns in the 13-12 win over Kentucky.
Smart said of quarterback Carson Beck after Tuesday’s practice: “I’m sure he would say he’d like to have some throws back. With three games in last year, he felt the same way. There are some throws he’d like to have back. I’ve seen a lot of Carson to know that he’s in a good head space. He’s a really good quarterback.”
