Georgia QB Carson Beck on his most memorable moment from playing Texas the first time
ATLANTA — A strange play to end the first half of the SEC championship game left Georgia football starting quarterback Carson Beck on the field injured.
More than half a dozen staff members surrounded Beck, who was down on the field after the play ended.
Beck was sacked by Texas’ Trey Moore and fumbled, while Anthony Hill returned it to the Georgia 23-yard line with offensive lineman Dylan Fairchild ending up with the ball as the half ended.
Texas led 6-3 at the half.
Georgia radio sideline reporter D.J. Shockley indicated Gunner Stockton will be inserted in the game in the second half.
Beck wasn’t spotted when players were warming up.
Georgia radio sideline reporter D.J. Shockley said “It looks like it may be Gunner time now.”
Stockton indeed went in the game.
Georgia coach Kirby Smart told ABC before the second half that Beck is “out.”
It appeared it was a right elbow injury. He was icing it.
Smart offered an injury update on Beck to ABC before he left the field at halftime.
“They just said his hand got hit as he was throwing it there,” Smart said. “Guy came all , the way around the edge, which people do on that situation. He’s gotta be aware of it and just get rid of the ball.”
Asked if he will be OK, Smart said: “He should be, I don’t know. We’ve gotta go look at him.”
Gunner Stockton is the backup quarterback but has played sparingly this season. In three games, he is 13 of 16 for 135 yards but he played extensively last year in the blowout of Florida State in the Orange Bowl
Beck entered Saturday completing 65.1 percent of his passes for 3,429 yards with 28 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
He was 7 of 13 for 56 yards in the first half.
