A Mexican-British man, whose family alleged he was arrested in Qatar six months ago for being gay, was able to leave Doha on Monday, Mexican officials said.
Manuel Guerrero, an airline employee, was detained in February in the Gulf state, where homosexuality is illegal.
The Mexican Foreign Ministry said Guerrero left Qatar Monday after concluding an administrative process established by authorities there.
Guerrero flew to London, where he will undergo medical check-ups and then travel to Mexico, the foreign ministry said in a statement.
Guerrero’s family had urged the Mexican government to intervene in the case, alleging that he was entrapped by Qatari police using a fake profile on gay dating app Grindr. Qatar denied these charges.
Guerrero, who had lived in Qatar for seven years, also accused the police of planting drugs in his apartment, his family said in February.
Qatari authorities accused him of drug possession and he was sentenced to six months in prison in June.
Amnesty International had called for his conviction to be overturned, warning there were “serious fears” he had been targeted for his sexual orientation and calling his treatment in custody “utterly horrific.”
