Coming off Sunday’s preseason finale against Washington, the New England Patriots had 89 players on their active roster. With the NFL’s roster deadline looming, this meant that 36 moves needed to be made to get under the 53-man limit.
The Patriots ended up making 37 moves, as charted in our Patriots Roster Cuts Tracker. The full list, split in different categories for easier digestion, looks as follows:
Players with less than four years of accrued experience are subject to waivers. This means that the following 30 will first have to pass through the waiver wire — where they might get claimed by any NFL team — before entering the open market.
The lion’s share of cuts made on Monday and Tuesday were of the waiver variety. As noted above, all of the players listed here are now subject to being claimed by other clubs before they could potentially return to the Patriots practice squad.
As for the list itself, it mostly includes depth players whose odds of making the 53-man roster were slim to begin with. There are a few names worth pointing out, however, including quarterback Bailey Zappe, running back Kevin Harris, cornerback Shaun Wade, kicker Chad Ryland.
Zappe was a spot starter for the Patriots the last two seasons, appearing in a combined 14 games with eight starts since his 2022 rookie season; Harris competed for the third running back spot and actually is one of the more surprising cuts; Wade saw action as a top rotational cornerback at times in training camp; Ryland found himself in a two-player battle for the kicker job he had held in 2023.
The non-football injury/illness list saw one addition on cutdown day:
The Patriots’ stalwart defensive tackle was diagnosed with blood clots earlier in training camp, leaving his future in question. However, the team apparently feels optimistic about his outlook and has designated him to return; he will be eligible to come back onto the active roster after Week 4.
The players listed here were all sent to injured reserve ahead of the roster cutdown deadline. While one has been designated to return, the others are out for the year:
Sophomore defender Marte Mapu, who is reportedly “week to week” in his recovery from an undisclosed injury, will start the season on IR. However, like Christian Barmore, he is able to come off the list at a later point.
The same is not true for Calvin Anderson and Armon Watts, who have both been sent to IR without the possibility of being reactivated further down the line. They are joining three others — OL Jake Andrews, OT Tyrone Wheatley Jr., WR JaQuae Jackson — as players on injured reserve out for the season.
The following players were moved from the active to the reserve physically unable to perform list. They remain with the Patriots, but do not count against the 53-man roster limit.
The Patriots entered cutdown week with three players on Active/PUP, and all three of them have since seen their status updated to Reserve/PUP. This means that they will have to sit out at least the first four games of the season, even though a comeback will obviously depend on medical clearance.
Kendrick Bourne and Sione Takitaki are both recovering from knee injuries, while Cole Strange tore his patellar tendon last December.
