WATCH: FSU’s Luke Clanton on wanting to win a national championship
Being the top-ranked amateur golfer is cool and all for junior Luke Clanton, but what’s important to him is bringing a national title for FSU.
Florida State junior golfer Luke Clanton officially earned his PGA Tour card on Friday.
Clanton, the No. 1 ranked amateur golfer in the world, is currently tied ninth at -9 at the Cognizant Classic in West Palm Beach.
Through the PGA Tour University Accelerated program − a program that allows college juniors, sophomores and freshman to earn points towards a tour card based off professional, college and amateur achievements − Clanton can earn his tour card while in school.
The program is scored based on points, with 20 needed to earn a tour card.
Coming into the weekend, Clanton sat at 19 points, only needing to make the cut to earn the last point and qualify for his tour card. His round of 66 on Friday secured him a weekend spot, and he is only four shots back of leader Jake Knapp.
Clanton birded nine times on Friday, with two bogeys on the card. He dazzled with a couple of long-range putts and approach shots.
This is Clanton’s 12th PGA Tour event, and he has four top 10s, including a pair of runners-up at last year’s RSM Classic and John Deere Classic.
While he earned his tour card, Clanton will return to FSU and compete for a national title before officially going pro. Last season, Clanton finished as the national runner-up with the Seminoles golf team.
