Tennis quickly moves on and Taylor Fritz looks set to hop straight from the ATP Finals to the Davis Cup.
The man now nailed on to finish as the world number four in 2024 reached the final in Turin where he came up against Jannik Sinner.
In a repeat of the US Open final in September, Fritz couldn’t determine a different outcome and once again lost the match in straight sets.
However, the fact that Fritz has started to reach these big finals will surely give him some confidence for the future.
Fritz has worked hard at certain aspects of his game and it’s fair to say that he’s edging closer to winning a breakthrough tournament on the tour.
With the Davis Cup coming so quickly after the ATP Finals, Fritz has now confirmed for definite whether or not he will be playing for the USA.
USA face a humdinger of a quarter-final with Australia first up and that could be an electric affair.
Fritz beat Alex de Minaur at the ATP Finals and the USA would dearly love to have their talisman ready for that match.
If selected, Fritz will be on board for his country despite the first match coming just days after his defeat in Turin.
He said during his press conference: “Yeah, I mean, first question, I will be going to Davis Cup. I think they want me to practice tomorrow. I said it’s probably not going to happen. I think I need a day off.
“Yeah, I would love to just go home. All the players, we came together and we said, we’ve got a really strong team, let’s give our best effort, try to win this thing.
“I can’t do that to the guys. I got to go out and I’m going to give it my best effort with them. I’ll be there tomorrow.”
At 27-years-old, Fritz does have time on his side in professional tennis, with his best years likely to be ahead of him.
Sinner is 23 and looks a dominant force right now but all Fritz needs is a little bit of luck in a draw to avoid him and a big title can be claimed in the future.
In the short term all eyes will be focused on the Davis Cup and the USA will feel they have a genuine chance to win the crown.
With Tommy Paul and Ben Shelton also in the team, there is enough talent on display for the USA to go deep in the tournament.
Fritz will have a spring in his step for the Davis Cup and after enjoying a solid end to 2024, the USA can’t be discounted from winning the whole thing.
