Two players have been suspended and one is no longer on the Fresno State men’s basketball team following an NCAA investigation into gambling, the Fresno Bee reports. Fresno State guards Jalen Weaver and Zaon Collins did not play in Saturday’s game at Air Force for “eligibility” reasons, according to the media outlet, and guard Mykell Robinson — who hasn’t played since January — has since been removed from the roster entirely.
The university announced Saturday following the Fresno Bee’s breaking report that Weaver and Collins “are being withheld from competition” amid eligibility concerns, but no other information was provided. Weaver is Fresno State’s leading scorer this season at 12.6 points per game.
The Mountain West Conference confirmed in a statement Saturday that it was in “communication with Fresno State as the institution processes a review of an eligibility matter.”
According to ABC30 sports anchor Alec Nolan of Fresno, Ca., two of the three basketball players accused of sports gambling allegedly placed bets on games they actively played in. He reports through sources that the wagers included unders on rebounds and unders on point totals.
Fresno State is 5-23 overall, which is the single-most losses in program history. At 1-16 in conference play, that equals the most losses in a single season in Mountain West history and Saturday’s setback against Air Force in overtime equaled the program’s 10th straight defeat, which tied a program record.
Saturday’s win was Air Force’s first in conference action this season, snapping a 15-game skid.
The NCAA has clear guidelines on gambling and student-athletes found to be connected with any source of wagers are ineligible for competition. According to the Fresno Bee, that includes any type of sports betting activities involving intercollegiate, professional or amateur games or competition.
