“I kind of have experience with sudden death playoffs, because I’ve been in two actually, before [Monday],” said Georgantas, the first individual winner from Foxborough since Scott Congdon in 2001. “So I was feeling confident.”
Georgantas held a two-stroke lead heading into his final hole, the 159-yard 13th, but he had his first and only double bogey of the round. After placing 14th at last year’s final, he was able to savor his playoff victory.
“It feels good,” Georgantas said of his victory. “It’s a good way to represent Foxborough.”
With McGrath (71) setting the pace, however, Pope Francis (308) edged Westwood (310), Nashoba (310), and Old Rochester (310) for the team title, the first for the Catholic school (formerly Springfield Cathedral).
Quinn Woytowicz (78), Jack Ouellette (78), and Jack Dias (81) also carried the flag for the Cardinals, who were 20 over par.
“[I was] bummed out that the season was going to be over, but it couldn’t have ended in a better way,” McGrath said.
Westwood, led by a 1-over par 73 from Patrick Dalton, won a tiebreaker to finish second.
“One of the great things about championships is, nobody can ever take that away from you,” Pope Francis coach John Anziano said. “Records will be broken, but once you’re a champion, you’re always a champion.”
