FS1 Evening Programming Highlights MLB AT RICKWOOD FIELD: A TRIBUTE TO THE NEGRO LEAGUES and JACKIE ROBINSON: GET TO THE BAG
LOS ANGELES – On Monday, Jan. 20 – Martin Luther King Jr. Day – FOX Sports honors the enduring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his family presenting a powerful lineup of sports and special programming.
The centerpiece of the day’s programming is the inaugural CORETTA SCOTT KING CLASSIC (CSKC) on the FOX broadcast network – a women’s college basketball doubleheader from the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ, celebrating female empowerment in sports and featuring four elite teams: No. 1 UCLA vs. Baylor at 3:00 PM ET and No. 7 Texas vs. No. 8 Maryland at 5:30 PM ET.
The CSKC is the first time the names of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King have been licensed for a sporting event. FOX Sports, Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment and Playfly Sports have partnered with The King Center, founded by Coretta Scott King and currently led by their daughter Dr. Bernice A. King, to launch this historic event.
Throughout the day, FOX Sports will spotlight key moments in the Kings’ legacy, including Coretta Scott King’s signing of MLK Day into law in 1983, Dr. King’s “I Have A Dream” speech, historical addresses from the UCLA and Texas campuses, and more.
Veteran announcer Dave Sims will call the action with Sarah Kustok providing expert analysis for both games. UCLA head coach Cori Close and Maryland head coach Brenda Frese will both be mic’d up throughout their respective contests.
Additionally on FS1, BIG EAST rivals Georgetown vs. Villanova tip off at 6:00 PM ET with play-by-play announcer Alex Faust and analyst Jim Spanarkel on the call.
Following the college basketball action, at 8:00 PM ET, FS1 will air a special encore presentation of MLB AT RICKWOOD FIELD:A TRIBUTE TO THE NEGRO LEAGUES. Filmed at the historic Rickwood Field, the oldest professional ballpark in the United States and former home of the Birmingham Black Barons, the special celebrates the legacy of the Negro Leagues and their lasting impact on the history of American baseball.
Capping off the evening at 11:00 PM ET, FS1 will showcase JACKIE ROBINSON: GET TO THE BAG, an immersive hip-hop documentary that explores the remarkable career of Jackie Robinson. The film goes beyond his legendary achievements in baseball, highlighting his significant contributions to social justice and his lasting influence as a cultural icon.
