During FOX Nation’s upcoming docuseries on Alabama head football coach Kalen DeBoer’s debut season in Tuscaloosa, The Tides That Bind: Inside Alabama Football, the difference between the Nick Saban era and the current one is evident. If not obvious.
As AL.com’s Nick Kelly relayed from an early look at the first episode, the locker room has a frenzy whenever DeBoer says a curse word as innocent as “hell” – a far cry from the profanity-laced Saban regime.
“A narrative emerged early in Kalen DeBoer’s tenure that he never curses. It’s based in some truth. He doesn’t use near as much colorful language as many in his profession do. But there’s not some ban on curse words in the building or even from DeBoer,” Kelly wrote.
“An early moment in the documentary showed DeBoer speaking to the team before the Georgia game, and it included a curse word, albeit not the most profane of them all.
“There was a pause, and DeBoer grinned. The locker room got loud, reacting to the coach dropping the rare curse word. The room had to get quiet so he could continue talking.”
DeBoer built the series as an intimate look into the program’s culture beyond just the locker room.
“Alabama football’s legacy is unparalleled, and this partnership allows fans to see what goes into wearing the crimson and white,” said DeBoer, per a press release. “This is more than just a football story – it is a look at the passion and culture that surrounds this program. It also gives viewers a look inside the team and what we embody, including the discipline and resilience that define this program.”
DeBoer isn’t trying to be Saban. He completely renovated Saban’s office to give it a modern look. He doesn’t curse.
Saban doesn’t want DeBoer to be just like him anyway.
Certainly, no one would confuse the locker room’s behavior under DeBoer relative to Saban. For the program’s sake, they better hope the on-field product does a better job of hiding that next season.
