OFFICIAL GCAA RELEASE (COMING SOON)
NEW ORLEANS – For the second consecutive year, the University of New Orleans golf program has placed four student-athletes on the Golf Coaches Association of America’s Cobalt Golf All-American scholar list.
Thomas Artigas, Kyle Bennett, Mason Roberts, and Matt Weber were all chosen for their efforts both on the course and, more importantly, in the classroom during the 2023-2024 school year. Bennett played in 30 rounds, averaging 71.93 strokes – the third lowest single-season average in school history. The junior graduated a year early with a degree in Finance and concluded his time on the Lakefront with a 3.4 grade point average.
Artigas played 15 rounds last season, achieving a career-best average of 75.27, with a cumulative grade point average of 3.909 while earning his degree in Management. Roberts played in 27 rounds, also achieving a career-best average of 74.29, with a cumulative grade point average of 3.508 while earning his degree in Marketing. Weber played in 15 rounds for the Privateers in the spring, averaging 72.26 strokes with a grade point average of 3.67 while pursuing his MBA.
Both Bennett and Roberts were selected for the second consecutive year and the second time in their careers on the Lakefront. Bennett’s brother Kyle, and Florian Moosmeier have the most selections in school history with three apiece.
To earn the distinction of Cobalt Golf All-American Scholar from the Golf Coaches Association of America, a student-athlete must be either a sophomore, junior, or senior both athletically and academically, maintain a career GPA over 3.2, average under 76 strokes per event, and participate in 50% of their team’s rounds throughout the season. Recipients must also demonstrate high moral character and be in good standing at their college or university.
This past year, 532 Div. I student-athletes from 180 schools earned Cobalt Golf All-America Scholar honors. The Southland Conference had 22 selections across six schools. New Orleans’ four selections were the most among Louisiana-based Southland schools and tied with HCU and UIW for the most in the league. UTRGV and Stephen F. Austin, who are joining the league next season, each had two selections.
All 15 Cobalt (formerly Srixon/Cleveland) All-American scholar selections in program history have occurred during Head Coach Jeff Lorio‘s tenure on the Lakefront.
