The Pittsburgh Steelers will head to Indianapolis for the NFL Combine this week, which will continue the process of meetings and evaluations for these players. More than anything, interviews, medical evaluations, and on-field testing will be highlighted.
With that being said, the Steelers will have a certain set of players to watch. Here are five players the team could target to watch:
Michigan IDL Kenneth Grant
Perhaps the favorite to be the Steelers’ first-round draft pick, Grant will likely come in at 340 pounds but should rival some of the best numbers at the NFL Combine in recent years. Grant has seen a lot of comparisons to Jordan Davis in terms of his size and testing. He said that he plans to break the five-second barrier on the 40-yard dash, and if he puts up freaky numbers, Grant could work his way out of the Steelers’ range quite quickly.
Grant is the one true nose tackle who makes a lot of sense for the Steelers. If he ascends past their range, it becomes far likelier for the Steelers to draft a 5-technique or just pivot to wide receiver. Either way, look for Grant to put on a show.
Texas RB Jaydon Blue
The Steelers feel like a team that must pivot away from the power backs they have now. One of Najee Harris or Jaylen Warren is fine, but with a team built on the ground game with a limited passing upside, they need explosiveness out of their backfield. Pittsburgh is unlikely to take one super early, but getting to the third round and beyond makes a lot more sense to get a speed back.
The team already saw Virginia Tech’s Bhayshul Tuten and UCF’s R.J. Harvey at the Senior Bowl. At the NFL Combine, Texas’ Jaydon Blue could make an impression. Blue came out in a year, and no one expected him to come out. As a relative unknown, Blue’s stock sits as a mid-day three pick. He might put on a show and introduce himself to a broader audience, but he is a player with plenty of fans in the NFL. He can fly, and Blue is likely to showcase that.
Notre Dame CB Benjamin Morrison
Cornerback is not talked about enough as an early need for the Steelers, but they could snag one early, even in the first round, if the value is right. One of those players who could experience a fall or slot right into their spot at 21st overall is Notre Dame’s Benjamin Morrison. Morrison is a talented player, but his season ended after a hip injury.
Hip injuries are tricky, and Morrison might not even participate in the NFL Combine’s activities. If Morrison’s medicals check out, the athleticism questions remain on top of that. The tape is quite good, but Morrison has to answer many questions.
Ole Miss WR Tre Harris
While everyone talks about the three first-round wide receivers for the Steelers in Emeka Egbuka, Matthew Golden, and Luther Burden, Ole Miss’s Tre Harris could lead the way for the next group. He might be one of the best options available at 52, and while there are issues with the offense he played in translating into meaningful NFL reps, Harris has athleticism questions to answer, too.
The long speed is a significant question, as is the quickness in and out of breaks. Harris showcases flashes, but with the limited route tree he ran during a large portion of his college tape, the suddenness and baseline traits will decide how willing teams will be to bet on him on early day two.
