New Fitness Park at Martin Luther King Jr. Park in Fort Smith
The City of Fort Smith opened a new Fitness Park at Martin Luther King Jr. Park. Users can download an app that acts as a coach.
The city unveiled a new fitness court at Martin Luther King Jr. Park on Oct. 8.
The fitness court features seven workout stations that allow users to leverage their own body weight. It was created with people aged 14 and older and with all abilities in mind. The workouts are adaptable for all fitness levels, allowing participants to work at their own pace. Users also can download the free fitness court app, which acts as a “coach-in-your-pocket” and enhances the outdoor facility into “a digitally supported wellness experience.”
Fort Smith, along with other municipalities in the United States, was awarded grant funding from the National Fitness Campaign to help support the program.
The city worked with the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith student Katelin Brown, who designed the mural.
Fort Smith Mayor George McGill participated in the unveiling.
“Whenever I come here, I have good flashbacks,” McGill said. “These were my starting grounds. This is where I played basketball and had fun as a child. This project symbolizes our commitment to fostering healthy lifestyles and bringing them to the public. You’re in this park named in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. His vision is one of unity and progress. We will continue to build a community where everyone can find a place. This fitness station not only encourages outdoor activity but also reflects the creativity and spirit of Fort Smith.”
The fitness court is an innovative design that “blends art and fitness in a creative space.”
The fitness court is just one of the park’s more recent improvements. The city is upgrading the 20-year-old splash pad before next summer. Last year, a new playground designed to be inclusive was opened to the public. Fort Smith is also renovating its other parks, with a new playground area at Creekmore Park and a new bathhouse for the city’s swimming pool. Work continues at Carol Ann Cross Park, and John Bell, Jr. Park will also see new additions.
The fitness court sits where there is a skate park. Those pieces will be back in place.
