PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (WAGM) – The Fort Fairfield golf team claimed another Aroostook League title recently. The Tigers are now focused on the State Championship on Saturday at Natanis
”I am wicked excited. I think we have a pretty good shot this year. I think experience is everything. If you look at it we have Michael and Brett are playing in their fourth year and my underclassmen this will be their third year so I think experience is everything,” said Noah Bernard.
”It will be really fun like it always is. We will have a good time and compete all the people there,” said Michael Bruce.
Bruce will make his fourth straight appearance in the State Championship. He won the Aroostook League title in a playoff with teammate Cayden Ala.
”The playoff holes were good pressure heading to States,” said Cayden Ala.
The two friends say they enjoy the competition on the course and they push each other to get better.
”It makes me play harder,” said Bruce, “I don’t go out and mess around because I don’t want to let him beat me.”
”Playing with Michael and playing with Coach helps out a lot,” said Ala.
Bruce says that he has played Natanis several times and knows that there are several factors to having success on Natanis.
”Keeping the ball in play and being able to putt well. That is what matters,” said Bruce.
Fort Fairfield Junior Isabella Winters was the girls medalist at the Aroostook League match and will compete in the School Championship on Saturday.
”I was so excited to qualify. I was only girl from the school and it was exciting,” said Isabella Winters.
Winters is one of several girls on the Fort Fairfield squad and that has made for a fun experience.
”We are all really good friends. We play sports together and we are all close,” said Winters.
Bernard said this is a veteran group of players and he hopes their knowledge of the course will help them be successful.
”I am just looking to finish better than last year when we finished fourth. I am hoping our experience can help us,” said Bernard.
Ala and several of his teammates juggle their time between the golf course and the Tigers soccer team. Both teams are having successful seasons and the Junior says he isn’t feeling the pressure.
”There’s not really any we just need to do what we can do because we know we can go out there and compete,” said Ala.
