A former US Open champion has yet to commence her season and her stint on the sidelines is set to continue.
Canada’s Bianca Andreescu shocked the world when she beat Serena Williams to claim the title at Flushing Meadows back in 2019.
But the 24-year-old has been blighted by injury ever since, and she has not completed a full season since.
Andreescu did not commence her 2025 season in January, and fans will not expect to see her back on court for some time to come.
Andreescu has suffered a nightmare run of injuries over the past several seasons.
The former World number four has been blighted by a stress fracture in addition to long-term back and ankle injuries.
Now she has posted another worrying update and announced she underwent emergency surgery to remove her appendix. This took place after she felt some discomfort while preparing for the Merida Open, which was due to be her first tournament of the season.
Taking to Instagram, Andreescu told her 832,000 followers: “Quick life update – training was going so well and I was very excited for the @wtameridaopen to be my first tournament of the 2025 season.
“However, I unexpectedly started experiencing some sharp pain in my stomach, which led to an emergency appendectomy. The surgery went smoothly, and I am on the road to recovery.” Andreescu then told fans when she expects to make a turn to tennis.
“My plan is to be back on the court for the clay season, stronger than ever,” she added. “Thanks so much for all your support-can’t wait to get back to competing!”
Andreescu last played at the WTA’s Japan Open in October 2024.
She reached the quarter-finals where she was beaten by British number one Katie Boulter 1-6, 2-6.
Andreescu returned to the tour after a nine-month injury absence at the French Open last May, where she made it to the third round and lost to eventual runner-up Jasmine Paolini.
Her best result came at the Libema Open on grass, as Andreescu defeated Naomi Osaka on the way to making the final.
Andreescu faced Liudmila Samsonova in the championship match and she took the lead by winning the first set. But the Russian turned the match around and completed a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 win.
