There has been a troubling trend across college football this season. Players have decided to stop playing in the middle of the season in order to utilize their red-shirt year and transfer to another school. It hasn’t happened to the Ohio State football program yet, but it almost seems inevitable.

The most high-profile case of this happening so far is the case of Matthew Sluka. The UNLV quarterback decided to stop playing after starting 3-0 because the university wasn’t paying him the NIL money that was promised to him. There have been mixed opinions on his decision to do this.

A former Ohio State player has decided to stop playing in the middle of the season and utilize his redshirt as well. Former Buckeye receiver Kaleb Brown has decided to sit out the rest of the 2024 season and he will enter the transfer portal in search of more playing time.

Brown transferred from Ohio State after the 2022 season. The former four-star recruit decided to transfer to Iowa. In 2022, he had 22 catches for 215 yards and a touchdown. This season, he has just one catch for five yards. He clearly wants more opportunities in a more high-powered offense.

The reason why Brown left the Ohio State Buckeyes is because of the competition in the receiver room. It seems as though he has gotten beaten out at Iowa as well. I’m not sure what the next step in his journey will be, but I doubt it will be at a Power 4 program.

Brown will likely end up at a MAC school or perhaps in the Sun Belt. He doesn’t have a lot of tape that shows he can contribute to a major college football program. In today’s day and age of NIL, he’ll likely just go to the place that can give him the biggest check.
