Former NFL quarterback Jay Cutler was arrested Thursday following a minor crash in downtown Franklin, Tennessee, according to the Franklin Police Department.
Cutler, 41, was charged with driving under the influence, possession of a handgun under the influence, failure to exercise due care to avoid a collision and implied consent, per a news release.
Officers responded to Bridge Street and 2nd Avenue north following a report of a crash at around 5 p.m., according to an affidavit from Williamson County. On the scene, the driver of a GMC told them that a man driving a White Ram truck had rear-ended his vehicle and offered $2,000 if he didn’t call the police before attempting to flee.
An officer spoke to Cutler, who says he allegedly smelled of alcohol, had bloodshot eyes, was staggering, swaying and slurred his words, per the affidavit. Cutler also refused to perform a standardized field sobriety test.
Cutler was taken into custody by police and a blood search warrant was obtained at a nearby medical center. During a search of Cutler’s car, a rifle was allegedly found in the backset and a loaded handgun was found in the center console.
Cutler was booked into Williamson County Jail and released on $5,000 bond, according to police. Cutler was released under the condition that he does not drive cars without an ignition interlock device — which measures breath alcohol content — or while under the influence, per the affidavit.
A representative for Cutler did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Cutler is best known for his 12 season career with the NFL, most of which he spent with the Chicago Bears. He was also married to reality TV star Kristin Cavallari before they divorced in 2020, and appeared in the show “Very Cavallari,” which premiered in 2018 and focused on Cavallari’s business ventures as well as their family.
Cutler and Cavallari share three children together, two boys and a girl.
