A former NBA MVP now has more technical fouls than he does minutes played this season.
Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid was assessed a bizarre technical foul during his team’s 118-114 overtime win against the Indiana Pacers on Sunday.
The infraction occurred while Pacers guard Andrew Nembhard was attempting a free throw late in overtime. Embiid could be seen on the bench waving a towel to distract him.
Officials didn’t give him a T during the game, but the league reviewed the footage and gave him one after the fact.
Nembhard missed the free throw, and Indiana went on to lose the game, and the NBA won’t be giving them a win after the fact.
Embiid, a 7-time All-Star who won MVP in 2023, is out with a knee injury. He averaged a career-high 34.7 points and 5.6 assists per game last season.
Per NBA rules, he will need 15 more technical fouls to incur a suspension. He had six last season and seven during the 2022-23 season.
