In the early going of the 2024 preseason, it looks like the Los Angeles Lakers are loving the leadership and guidance new head coach JJ Redick has brought them. He has apparently brought a more technical and analytical approach to basketball, as well as a new focus on the development of young players within the organization.
But there are still skeptics and critics of the Lakers’ decision to hire him in the first place. He has no prior coaching experience at the pro or college levels, and he was previously a podcaster and broadcast analyst who gave some frank and strident opinions on players and coaches.
Some have wondered how his coaching gig would go after making some of his opinions known to a large audience. Former NBA star Steve Francis made it clear that he doesn’t think Redick is necessarily qualified right now to be an NBA head coach (h/t The Cold Wire).
The only way for Redick to quiet his critics is to guide the Lakers to a successful season, which could likely mean getting them to, at a minimum, the Western Conference finals.
