Former Florida football and current NFL free agent receiver Kadarius Toney has been arrested after he allegedly “physically assaulted” a woman last month.
The incident occurred at a residence in Douglasville, Georgia on Jan. 14. According to an arrest warrant obtained by USA TODAY Sports on Wednesday, Toney strangled a woman “with enough force to cause her to be unable to breathe.” The woman was left with red marks on her neck and petechial hemorrhaging in her eyes.
According to the arrest warrant, Toney also prevented the woman from seeking help by taking her phone. An arrest warrant was issued for Toney the following day on Jan. 15. Toney was booked nearly a month later in the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office facility on Feb. 6.
Toney has been charged with one count of aggravated assault (strangulation) and one count of obstructing/harassing 911 calls. Toney’s bond was set at $25K for each charge.
The Cleveland Browns released the 26-year-old in December after an error-filled game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Dec. 8. Toney was a taunting penalty and a muffed punt in his third game with the Browns. Toney played a key role on the 2023 Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl team, which included a Super Bowl record 65-yard punt return to set up a crucial touchdown.
Toney was on the 2023 Super Bowl champion Chiefs team but did not play in the postseason due to an injury. He was also listed as out for “personal reasons” after he said on Instagram Live that he was not injured and that Kansas City was holding him out of action.
The Chiefs cut Toney before the 2024 season. He later joined the Browns’ practice squad in September and made his season debut on Nov. 17 vs. the New Orleans Saints. Toney was originally drafted with the 20th pick in the first round of the 2021 NFL draft.
He played collegiately for the Gators from 2017-20 and sparingly in his first three seasons in Gainesville. He had a breakout 2020 season with 70 receptions for 984 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns, as well as 19 rushes for 161 yards and a touchdown.
Toney has 82 catches for 760 yards with three touchdowns with three teams across five seasons in the NFL. He had 39 receptions for 420 yards in his rookie season with the Giants but has not crossed 200 yards since.
