Travis Hunter is one of the most gifted and talented NFL prospects in recent years. In just over a month, Hunter is expected to be selected by an NFL organization within the top 5 picks. While it’s still unclear exactly where he’ll end up, one thing is certain: Hunter wants to play on both sides of the ball, just like his college head coach, Deion Sanders.
The biggest question is whether Hunter will play equal reps at wide receiver and cornerback, or if one position will take priority over the other. Hunter, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, earned the award by playing both positions at an equal rate. However, many speculate that playing both professionally could take a greater toll on his body than it did in college.
During his media availability, Hunter made it clear that what he does is harder than what MLB superstar Shohei Ohtani does as a two-way player in baseball. Hunter let many people down when he announced he would not be participating in the NFL Combine, but he still showed up for media and team meetings.
On Monday, during ESPN’s Get Up, Dan Orlovsky discussed whether the former Colorado Buffalo should play wide receiver or cornerback more in the NFL. Orlovsky provided his reasoning while comparing Hunter to NFL legends.
“Sometimes when he gets the ball in his hands, Travis Hunter looks like Randy Moss… Sometimes he looks like Tyreek Hill,” Orlovsky said.
That is extremely high praise, as Randy Moss is considered one of the greatest wide receivers of all time, and Tyreek Hill is also an elite player at the position. Orlovsky’s comparisons only add to the hype surrounding Hunter.
It will be interesting to see how the team that drafts Hunter handles his dual position potential. Nonetheless, it’s clear that he will play both positions at some point in the NFL.
By bringing in new coaches and executives earlier in the NFL offseason, the Patriots signaled a change in organizational philosophies and strategies.
