As first cousins growing up together in Roselle, the chemistry and the bond between Brandon Puryear and Shymir Burgess goes beyond the typical quarterback-receiver dynamic.
“We always had a bond together,” said Burgess. “We’re cousins together so we grew up together. We always played backyard football, playing catch, going outside it all built up.”
Playing together for what will likely be the last time on a football field, the cousins proved to be an unstoppable tandem.
In total, Burgess and Puryear scored five touchdowns, as the duo found the end zone in each of Roselle’s four second half possessions as the host Rams pulled away and defeated Roselle Park, 46-14, in the 105th edition of this Thanksgiving holiday rivalry on Wednesday night at Arminio Field in Roselle.
Puryear, a senior, completed 9-of-16 passes for 228 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing for 77 yards and two TDs on 11 carries. Two of those TD passes went to Burgess, a junior, who finished with seven receptions for 217 yards and three touchdowns.
For Roselle (4-7), it is the fourth win in the last five meetings. Roselle Park (3-7) owns a 54-43-8 lead in the all-time series.
