Florida football hired Arkansas secondary coach Deron Wilson as its new defensive backs coach on Monday.
Wilson brings familiarity with the Florida Gators coaching staff as he worked a year as a quality control analyst working with cornerbacks under head coach Billy Napier in 2022.
For the past two years, Wilson worked at Arkansas, where in 2023 he turned around the secondary. The Razorbacks ranked fourth in the SEC in passing yards allowed per game at 202.8 yards and their 12 interceptions ranked fourth in the league. That included four pick sixes, matched by four other teams to lead FBS.
“It’s great to have Deron back in the building,” Napier said. “His exposure to our system and tree of coaches, to go along with the experience in the SEC makes his hiring a no-brainer. His pedigree and relationships in recruiting will be valuable as well. He will help us continue to improve going forward.”
Wilson’s other experience includes two years as defensive coordinator at McNeese (2020-21) and three years as a graduate assistant and cornerbacks coach at Texas-San Antonio.
“It’s an honor to rejoin the Florida Gator football staff,” Wilson said. “I’m inspired by the culture Coach Napier is building and the standard of excellence players and coaches are held to.
Wilson replaces UF secondary coach Will Harris, who left the program earlier this month.
