Hubert Davis and the UNC basketball program got their guy.
One of the top-ranked players in the Class of 2025, five-star forward Caleb Wilson has announced his commitment to North Carolina. The Atlanta, Georgia native chose the Tar Heels over fellow finalists Kentucky and Ohio State.
Wilson made his commitment announcement on NBA on TNT after the conclusion of the game between the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics. While his decision was one fans had to wait quite some time for (he didn’t announce his decision until 1:20 AM EST!), it was well worth the wait!
Now, while we officially found out earlier this morning, Wilson has reportedly been silently committed to the UNC basketball program for over a month now.
This is a major addition for North Carolina, as there’s been plenty of talk about the lack of a blue-chip prospect among the Tar Heels 2025 recruiting class. Wilson’s commitment changes that, as he instantly becomes the prized possession of this current three-player class.
Wilson’s recruitment has been an interesting one to say the least, as many attempted to gauge what the 6-foot-9 forward was looking to do. While there was plenty of back-and-forth (especially regarding who was considered the “favorite”), North Carolina ends up getting their guy, a major addition for next year’s Tar Heels squad.
The No. 6-ranked player in the Class of 2025, according to 247Sports, Wilson is a guy who has the talent and potential to make an impact immediately when he steps foot on campus. Back in July, 247Sports Director of Scouting Adam Finkelstein had this to say about the newest Tar Heel:
“Wilson is an athletic and wiry four-man with significant two-way tools. He has continued to grow and now has positional size at 6-foot-9 along with a 7-foot wingspan, 9-foot standing reach, and a rangy, elastic body type. He’s gradually filing out a naturally leaner frame, but is extremely mobile for his size and able to cover the court.
Wilson’s combination of size, effortless mobility, and flexibility gives him extreme potential versatility on the defensive end of the floor. He’s already capable of guarding multiple positions, switching onto guards, and being a major rim protector (2.5 blocks per game in the EYBL). His court coverage and total defensive metrics are off the charts as he can fly around the floor covering up mistakes, getting his hands on a ton of balls, and making plays (3.8 stocks per game).”
While this year’s team has left fans frustrated with their results, the addition of Wilson probably couldn’t have come at a better time. His commitment changes the narrative that North Carolina has fallen behind in recruiting (especially in regard to NIL funding), as the UNC basketball program showed they can get the guy they really want on the recruiting trail.
