Fitness Influencer and Gym Founder Aguilar Dies in Hospital Three Months After Shooting During Home Invasion – MyNewsLA.com

A noted fitness influencer and gym founder who had been hospitalized since being shot in the head during a follow-home robbery attempt in September has died, family and friends announced on Instagram.

Miguel Angel Aguilar, 40, was shot on Sept. 13 after he and his wife were confronted by four robbers outside their home on the 11400 block of North Thurston Circle in Bell Air. He died Saturday.

Aguilar was the founder and CEO of Self Made Training Facility, a chain of 30 gyms located throughout California and several other states including Arizona, Texas, Ohio, Nevada, Florida and Virginia. Aguilar and his brand also had more than 52,000 followers on Instagram.

“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our founder and CEO, Miguel Angel Aguilar,” his family and associates said in the Instagram post. “After a courageous three-month battle following the tragic incident that took place on September 13th, 2024, Miguel peacefully passed away on December 21st, 2024 surrounded by his loved ones.

“Miguel was more than just a leader; he was a visionary, an inspiration, a mentor, a father, a husband, family [man], and a dear friend to many. His unwavering dedication to Self Made Training Facility, his passion for the fitness industry and entrepreneurial spirit have left an enduring legacy.”

Three men from Oakland have been charged with murder and other charges stemming from the attempted robbery. A fourth suspect was fatally wounded during the confrontation.

Mahki Jamir Taylor, Jason Alexander Melara and Daymonee Christian Johnson, all 19, are charged with one count each of murder, second-degree robbery and shooting at an occupied motor vehicle, along with two counts each of attempted second-degree robbery and assault with a semiautomatic firearm.

The initial murder charges stemmed from the death of the fourth suspect, Mario Melara, who was identified as Jason Melara’s brother.

Mario Melara was severely injured during the robbery and shooting and later died at a hospital. It was unclear whether he was injured by one of the victims or one of the other suspects.

Prior to Aguilar’s death, Taylor was also facing one count of attempted murder and inflicting great bodily injury, according to the criminal complaint.

The three, who were arrested Oct. 10 in Northern California, are also facing allegations stemming from the use of a handgun.

They each entered not guilty pleas on Nov. 14 and are due back in court Jan. 7. Meanwhile, the three remain behind bars without bail.

In their Instagram post, Aguilar’s friends and family remembered him as a fitness enthusiast and innovator.

“Miguel revolutionized personal training and inspired countless individuals to pursue their fitness and entrepreneurial goals,” they said. “His strategic mind and innovative spirit were the driving force behind Self Made’s rapid growth and success.

“As we mourn the loss of our dear friend and leader, we also celebrate his extraordinary life and the positive impact he had on so many. Miguel’s spirit will live on through Self Made Training Facility. We will continue to honor his legacy by staying true to our mission and values while continuing to innovate and serve our franchises, trainers, members, clients, and the rest of our current and future Self Made Family members.”

Aguilar’s friends and followers shared their remembrances and condolences under the Instagram post.

“One of the best to ever do it,” Stephen Ray noted. “His legacy will be followed and has impacted so many of our journeys through life and fitness. RIP.”
